Key Terms Explained

Not sure what masonry or tuckpointing means? Here are plain-language definitions of the services we provide.

Masonry

Masonry is a construction method that uses individual units such as brick, stone, concrete block, or tile, bound together with mortar to build durable structures. Masonry is one of the oldest building techniques in the world, valued for its strength, fire resistance, and longevity. A properly built masonry structure can last well over 100 years.

Tuckpointing

Tuckpointing is a masonry repair process that involves removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks or stones and replacing it with fresh mortar. Tuckpointing is necessary when mortar joints crack, crumble, or allow water infiltration. Most residential tuckpointing projects cost between $500 and $2,500 and can be completed in 1 to 2 days.

Retaining Wall

A retaining wall is a structure built to hold back soil or rock from a slope, preventing erosion and creating level areas on a property. Retaining walls are commonly built from concrete block, natural stone, or poured concrete. A well-built masonry retaining wall typically lasts 40 to 100 years depending on materials and drainage.

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is a white, chalky deposit that appears on the surface of brick or concrete when water moves through the masonry and carries soluble salts to the surface. Efflorescence is a sign of moisture infiltration and is often an early warning that tuckpointing or waterproofing is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about masonry and concrete services in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area.

Q: What is masonry, and what types of masonry work do you offer?

Masonry is defined as the craft of building structures from individual units — such as brick, stone, concrete block, or tile — bound together with mortar. Masonry is one of the oldest and most durable construction methods in the world. At Markuson Construction, we offer a full range of masonry services including brickwork, tuckpointing, chimney repair and rebuilds, stone veneer installation, stucco application, retaining wall construction, and historic masonry restoration. We serve both residential homeowners and commercial property owners throughout the Omaha metro area.

Q: What is tuckpointing, and how do I know if my home needs it?

Tuckpointing is defined as the process of removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks or stones and replacing it with fresh mortar. Over time, mortar breaks down due to water infiltration, freeze-thaw cycles, and age — especially in Iowa and Nebraska winters. Signs your home may need tuckpointing include crumbling or cracked mortar joints, white staining (efflorescence) on brick surfaces, water leaking through masonry walls, or mortar that crumbles when you press it. Left untreated, failed mortar joints can lead to structural damage costing thousands of dollars to repair. Most tuckpointing projects can be completed in 1 to 2 days.

Q: How long does a concrete driveway or patio last?

A properly installed concrete driveway typically lasts 25 to 50 years with routine maintenance, while a concrete patio can last 30 or more years. The lifespan depends heavily on the quality of the pour, the thickness of the slab (we recommend a minimum of 4 inches for driveways, 6 inches for heavy vehicle areas), proper sub-base preparation, and control joint placement to manage cracking. In the Omaha and Council Bluffs climate, sealing concrete every 2 to 3 years significantly extends its life by protecting against freeze-thaw damage and deicing salt. Markuson Construction has completed over 500 concrete and masonry projects across the region, and we stand behind every pour.

Q: Do you offer free estimates, and how quickly can you start a project?

Yes — Markuson Construction offers free, no-obligation estimates on all masonry and concrete projects. You can request an estimate by calling (712) 545-9006 or by submitting our online contact form. We typically schedule estimates within 3 to 5 business days and provide written quotes within 24 hours of the site visit. Project start times vary by season — spring and summer are our busiest periods, so we recommend booking early. For urgent repairs such as chimney damage or failing retaining walls, we prioritize safety-related work and can often begin within 1 to 2 weeks.

Markuson Construction serves the greater Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa metro area, including Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Millard, Elkhorn, Gretna, Bennington, Fremont, Blair, and surrounding communities within approximately 50 miles of our Crescent, Iowa base.
